Inside the Classroom

The curriculum and activities offered in Key Stage 2 build on the foundations in Key Stage 1.

Our pupils are taught to be self-motivated, to give of their best in everything they do and to have strong self-belief. They’ll have opportunities to collaborate with their peers, engage in creative problem-solving and develop critical thinking skills that prepare them for the future.

Beyond the classroom

A Creative Curriculum

Cross-curricular links and breadth of curriculum are very strong features of our curriculum, which is approached through whole school themes; these are carefully rotated to avoid repetition. Some whole school themes have been: Let’s Remember 1900-1930, Ice and Fire, Britain as a Maritime Nation. The curriculum is further enhanced by an extensive programme of trips and visiting speakers.

Key Stage 2 Assessment

A combination of regular formative and summative assessment is used to track children’s progress throughout the school.

We use both formative and summative assessment to track your child’s progress, inform our planning and to ensure that all pupils receive the appropriate level of challenge or support to enable them to fulfil their potential.

All pupils at Fairfield are assessed termly using standardised tests in reading, spelling, maths and English. They take annual assessments in verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

Senior School Success

Our goal is that every child leaves us fully prepared for senior school, wherever that may be.

Our staff are extremely supportive in preparing our Year 6 children for the next stage in their education.

All our pupils move on to the senior school of their choice, with the majority being offered places at one, or more, of the independent schools in Bristol and North Somerset for Year 7.

We have developed excellent relationships with the Bristol independent schools and in North Somerset and help to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school. Last year our Year 6 pupils left Fairfield to go to Sidcot, QEH, Redmaids’ High, Badminton and Bristol Grammar School.
